Spice Girls

Rumors have been swirling for some time, and on Wednesday (July 6), the news that the Spice Girls are reuniting was officially announced. The group will reform for a concert commemorating the 21st anniversary of their first single, “Wannabe.” According to The Sun, they are planning an epic concert next summer in London’s Hyde Park. Tentatively slated for July 2017, publicist Alan Edwards is hoping that’ll be enough time to finally persuade both Mel C. and Victoria to jump on board.

For Spice Girls fans the world over, it’s pretty exciting just imagining this iconic crew of women joining back up together to sing all their hits. We here at Zap2it have conflicting ideas regarding which lady deserves the title of “Best Spice Girl.” Who cares if it’s been two decades since we were all singing “If you wanna be my lover” — Spice Girl fandom never dies.

Here’s who picked which Spice Girl and why:

Pick: ‘Scary Spice’ Mel B

You can keep your babies, your poshes and your gingers. Everybody knows the best one of the bunch is Scary Spice/Mel B. (real name Melanie Brown). She’s always good for a laugh on “America’s Got Talent”, she seems super sassy and tough and she is awesomely open about her sexuality. She told The Guardian in 2014, “People call me lesbian, bisexual or heterosexual, but I know who’s in my bed and that’s it.”

Pick: ‘Ginger Spice’ Geri Halliwell

Originally, Halliwell was known as Sexy Spice, but she gave up that title because all members of the group deserved to be known as “sexy.” She was the leader of the group and the one that held them all together. One could even say she was the Spice Girls’ Beyonce. According to Metro UK, it was Halliwell who convinced the record label that “Wannabe” should be their first single, the song that jumpstarted it all. When she went solo in 1998, the group thusly fell apart. To put it bluntly, there would have been no Spice Girls without Ginger.

Pick: ‘Sporty Spice’ Mel C

How does one accurately measure the “best” member of the Spice Girls? Given that they’re a singing group, vocal talent has to be taken into account. With that in mind, Sporty has to be looked at as not only the best member, but most valuable player in the Spice Girls arsenal. Without her, it’s just a bunch of British chicks who can’t really carry a tune. Besides, she was also awesome at soccer and could probably legitimately beat up her fellow Spice Girls.

Pick: ‘Baby Spice’ Emma B

Often overlooked like the child that her nickname conveys, the youngest Spice is quite possibly the one essential element that the group couldn’t have ever survived without. Part singer, part cheerleader, part rainbow, Baby Spice never appeared in public without a smile on her face and a song in her heart. While Ginger seemed to always have a solo career on her mind, Posh’s main talent was rudeness and the Mels were filler, Emma Bunton held the act together with a joy that shone through. Underneath those baby doll dresses and pigtails was real talent, and nobody ever put this Baby in a corner.

Pick: ‘Posh Spice’ Victoria Beckham

Using any measuring stick, Posh Spice is definitively the best of the bunch. She’s sassy, she’s smart, she’s got a killer wardrobe and she’s the only one who has managed to stay relevant almost 20 years after the rest of the girl group faded into ’90s obscurity. Victoria Beckham is an icon and the dictionary definition of Girl Power. Bow down, peasants.
