Rose ceremonies are never easy for “The Bachelorette,” especially when it gets down to the final few men. That being said, JoJo Fletcher really really lost control of her emotions during Monday night’s (July 18) episode. She fell to her knees in tears, bawling over what to do with Luke after he paused the evening’s elimination to tell JoJo that he’s falling in love with her.
After Ben Higgins told JoJo, “I love you,” during “The Bachelor,” and then chose Lauren to be his fiancee, JoJo promised she’d keep her feelings to herself until the final rose was given out. So, she did not say anything back to Luke other than, “Thank you.” Then, she proceeded to turn into a basket case.
Why was she so upset? Viewers could feel the pain emanating in her gut, and we couldn’t help but wonder if there’s part of the story that was not included in the episode’s final cut. Now this is pure speculation … but we’re assuming that during Luke’s hometown date — after seeing the surprise heart-shaped flower display, and the steamy make-out session during their romantic outdoor date — that the two decided to make his home in Texas a stand-in for a fantasy suite.
Technically, the contestants are not allowed to spend the night together until the fantasy suite date, but most viewers assume that no one waits that long to jump into bed together. Courtney Robertson revealed in her memoir, “I Didn’t Come Here to Make Friends,” that she and Ben Flajnik had sex outside the fantasy suite. “Ben and I did have sex in the ocean,” she writes. “On-camera. It was immediate but it was only for about twenty seconds and, um, it was just the tip.”
Executive producer Mike Fleiss revealed during a “20/20” interview that previous “Bachelor” contestant Bob Guinny slept with the most people during his season. Which means contestants are definitely getting it on outside the fantasy suite, and doing it often.
So, if JoJo and Luke got it on — and if Luke still didn’t say that he was falling in love with her — that would make sense as to why JoJo was willing to send him packing, even if it meant keeping the robot that is Chase in the competition.
When Luke finally told JoJo that he had real feelings for her, the rollercoaster of emotions would totally send JoJo into a tailspin. To go from trying to not be super upset that she got intimate with Luke, to needing to rework everything she had decided for that night’s rose ceremony … that’s a lot to deal with.
Audiences will see what happens on Monday night (July 25). Will JoJo pull it together and keep Luke around? Or will she be too frazzled and send the man who just opened up his heart to her back home to Texas? Hopefully, it will be the former.
“The Bachelorette” airs on Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. There will be a bonus two-hour episode on Tuesday, July 26, at the same time.
