When "Gotham" Season 2 came to an end, Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) was off in search of his one true love, Lee (Morena Baccarin). Surely that means everything will be bright and sunny for Gotham City's best detective in Season 3, right? Of course not.
"He goes down to the South to make amends with Lee because he's finally had this moment of clarity where he realizes that's ultimately the most important thing in his life, his relationship to her," McKenzie tells Zap2it. "And that beautiful moment between these two soulmates, of course, does not go well and he finds himself back in Gotham."
That's right, poor Jim strikes out with Lee -- at least for now -- and it leaves him in a dark place. "Gordon, being disillusioned on his personal side, doesn't rejoin the GCPD -- he's a bounty hunter," the actor teases.
There's where the Season 3 time jump comes into play. McKenzie reveals, "We move ahead six months and the monsters that were unleashed at the end of Season 2 are now running amok in Gotham and it's utter havoc."
That gives bounty hunter Jim plenty of targets to track down, even if his heart isn't really in it.
"He's just trying to get by. The only reason he's bounty hunting is to pay the bills and it also gives him that thrill of being in combat again, of having a challenge again," McKenzie says. "But the larger mission of cleaning up the city, he's kind of throwing his hands up in the air and said, 'I can't deal with this on an emotional and psychological level right now.'"
Of course, we all know the real reason McKenzie is excited to leave Gordon's detective job goodbye, at least for now. "Bounty hunter Jim doesn't wear a suit and tie," the actor jokes. "He wears a leather jacket. Black on black on black. It's really just about the clothes."
"Gotham" returns Monday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
