Kate Walsh, Isaiah Washington, Katherine Heigl 'Grey's Anatomy'

It’s almost time for “Grey’s Anatomy” to return to TV for its 13th season. Kelly McCreary, who plays Maggie on the show, told TV Line that the series will be shifting its focus back to “the foundational members of the show.” So, audiences can look forward to seeing long-timers such as Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Karev (Justin Chambers), Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Richard (James Pickens Jr.) back in the medical drama’s spotlight.

At first this sounded like a bad idea. After 13 seasons, there is nary a traumatic situation that these O.G. cast members haven’t already been through. In order to avoid the shampoo effect, writers would have to think of the some crazy situations — an alien invasion at Grey-Sloane, a 3rd sister of Meredith’s coming out of the woodwork … these ideas all sounds ridiculous.

But then we realized, focusing on these foundational characters could open the door wide open for past favorites to return. While many characters can’t come back because they were killed off — McSteamy, McDreamy, O’Malley and Lexi Grey are some examples — there are a number folks that could return to give Season 13 a seriously awesome shake up.

Following in line with the show’s current storylines, here are the characters Zap2it thinks should put on the scrubs one more time.

1. Dr. Izzie Stevens

Few things would be more exciting than the prodigal return of Katherine Heigl as Izzie Stevens –especially with Karev’s relationship with Jo (Camilla Luddington) now on the brink of disaster. Plus, it’s probably the best role Heigl has ever played. Even though, she will be starring in “Doubt” on CBS, there has to be a way to weave her character back into the ABC show.

2. Dr. Cristina Yang

Sandra Oh should definitely return for a multiple episode arc in this upcoming season. It was so strange that Meredith’s best friend didn’t return for McDreamy’s (Patrick Dempsey) funeral, and her lack of reference during Meredith’s year long spiral after the fact, was unfitting. There probably isn’t a better time for her to come back and explain her absence than now.

3. Dr. Preston Burke

Isaiah Washington may have already reprised his role as Dr. Preston Burke — where he wrapped up his storyline with a pretty bow — but he is a foundational character who deserves another deep dive. How’s his family life going? Does he miss working 24/7? There must be some sort of rare surgical technique only he can perform that could justify his character’s return.

Go with us here, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if he married a surgeon employed by Grey-Sloan and becomes best friends with Meredith!? That may be some out there fanfic on our part, but it would make for some seriously beautiful synchronicity.

4.  Dr. Callie Torres

Shared custody is never enough, and it would make sense for her to travel to Seattle for Christmas or Thanksgiving. We bet that it will only be a few episodes into Season 13 before audiences begin petitioning for Sara Ramirez to return as Callie. And we’d love to see the cool New York version of Miss Torres.

5.  Dr. Lauren Coswell

Hilarie Burton’s Lauren Coswell was nothing but trouble from the start. But she was such a beautiful little troublemaker, amirite? Arizona is still single and in the midst of a pretty bad dry spell, so there’s no way she’d be able to resist Lauren upon her return. But imagine if as soon as these two get serious, Callie surprises Sophia by coming to Seattle for the holidays? Oh, doctah!

6. Dr. Addison Montgomery

Kate Walsh’s character was the only one from “Grey’s” to earn a spin-off. “Private Practice” lasted six seasons, but we’ve never stopped missing the red-haired beauty that used to be Grey Sloan’s head OB-GYN doc. Any reason to bring her back for Season 13 would be welcomed with open arms.

“Grey’s Anatomy” Season 13 premieres on Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
