It’s that time of year again, when thousands of beautiful dogs descend upon Madison Square Garden for the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Monday (Feb. 11) was day one of the competition, with four groups taking center stage — the Hound, the Toy, the Non-Sporting and the Herding groups.
In the Hound group, the dogs brought down were the Afghan, American Fox Hound, Basset, Bluetick Coonhound, Harrier, Otter Hound and the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. The dogs finished American Fox Hound, Basset, PBGV and Otter Hound, which means the American Fox Hound goes on to Best in Show.
For Toys, the judge calls out the Affenpinscher, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Maltese, Miniature Pinscher, Papillon, Pekingese, Pomeranian and Pug. The top four finished Affenpinscher, Miniature Pinscher, Pekingese and Pug, so no repeat in Best in Show for the Pekingese. The Affenpinscher will go on to Best in Show.
In the Non-Sporting group, the judge calls down the Bichon Frise, Bulldog, Chow Chow, Dalmatian, French Bulldog, Standard Poodle and Tibetan Spaniel. The top four go Bichon Frise, Standard Poodle, French Bulldog and Tibetan Spaniel. So the “puts the lotion on its skin” dog heads to Best in Show.
For the Herding group, the dogs called out are the Bearded Collie, Beauceron, Border Collie, Canaan, German Shepherd, Old English Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Puli. The top four go Old English Sheepdog, Puli, Beauceron and the Canaan. So the big, fluffy Sheepdog is headed to Best in Show.
