Elwood, the 2007 World’s Ugliest Dog, died Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 28) at the age of eight. CNN reports that the death was unexpected. The cause is yet unknown, but Elwood was with owner Karen Quigley at the time he passed.
“The best part was he did not suffer, he was in my arms and with me,” Quigley tells the UPI. “For a little dog, he touched a lot of lives in his short time He did a lot of things. I couldn’t be more proud that people who haven’t met him loved him … I couldn’t be more proud.”
The pooch, whose tongue lolls out of his mouth at all times, was a Chihuahua and Chinese Crested mix who was nearly put down as a young pup — not by Quigley, by his original owners. But Quigley rescued him and after winning the World’s Ugliest Dog contest, his owner used Elwood’s fame to raise money for non-profit animal organizations. If you’re interested in more of Elwood’s story, Quigley wrote a children’s book called “Everyone Loves Elwood.”
