By now, you’ve heard Carly Rae Jepsen‘s insanely catchy single, “Call Me Maybe,” about 600 times thanks to the “repeat” button in your iTunes. But have you ever heard her live? The Canadian singer unleashed her addictive tune at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards almost immediately after her mentor Justin Bieber — and kinda showed him up.
While Biebs went for the full production number, with a crew of backup dancers and plenty of dance breakdowns, his live vocals suffered for it. (He’s a great singer, we know this, but he wasn’t at his best.)
Jepsen, on the other hand, kept it simple with her band, a few backup singers in weird wigs, and her energetic self. Clad in skintight shiny silver pants and a green top. While we loved her skip-walk around the stage, she seemed a tad awkward with all that space to fill. Maybe it would’ve been better if she kept the mic in a stand and danced around there.
Who knows, though — we were mostly busy dancing around in our living room and following her command to “Come on, sing it if you know it” pay too much attention. We did watch enough to feel better about ourselves knowing that she does the little “call me” motion with her hand when she sings the song too.
Despite the slight awkwardness, the simple production let the song’s catchiness shine — and it seemed much more natural than Bieber’s number. What did you think?
