A San Francisco 49ers fan died from injuries sustained after falling from a raised pedestrian walkway at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on Sept. 8. Police say the man, who was described as being in his 30s, appeared to be intoxicated.
The incident happened at around 1:30 p.m., shortly after kickoff at the 49ers-Green Bay Packers game. It’s unclear just how far the man fell from the walkway, which goes around Candlestick Park. Off-duty medics and police officers treated the man while they waited for an ambulance, but he was ultimately declared dead from his injuries.
“We would like to express our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time,” the 49ers say in a statement, adding that they didn’t find out about the death until after the game ended.
The man’s name has not been released bending notification of his family. This isn’t the first time a death has occurred due to someone falling from a stadium. The Associated Press reports that more than two dozen similar cases have taken place at stadiums around the country in the last decade.
Candlestick Park will be demolished in 2014 and turned into a shopping center. The 49ers will play in a new $1 billion stadium in Santa Clara instead.
