Police arrested New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on June 26 in connection to the murder of Odin Lloyd. Formal charges were not filed at the time of the arrest, and Hernandez is expected to be arraigned later in the day. Following the news of the arrest, the Patriots announced that they were releasing Hernandez.
“A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss,” the team says in a statement. “Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”
The 23-year-old football player was handcuffed by police at around 9 a.m. and brought into police custody. Though he has not been named a suspect in the murder of Lloyd, many details connect Hernandez to the homicide. His home was searched multiple times during the week by police.
“Today at approximately 8:47 a.m. Aaron Hernandez was arrested by Massachusetts State Police and North Attleboro Police,” Bristol District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter’s office says in a statement. “He will be arraigned at Attleboro District Court. Following his arraignment, Bristol District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter will meet with the press and issue a statement.”
Hernandez is expected to appear in court at 2 p.m. ET.
