During his arraignment, police revealed that Aaron Hernandez, 23, has been charged with the murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd. The former NFL star also faces five gun-related charges including possession of a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm without an ID card and possession a large capacity firearm.
Hernandez was arrested at approximately 8:47 a.m. on June 26 after over a week of police investigation. Not long after news of his arrest broke, the New England Patriots released the tight end from the team.
“A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss,” the team says in a statement. “Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do.”
Lloyd was the boyfriend of Hernandez’ girlfriend’s sister, and was also a football player. The motive for the crime has not been revealed. Lloyd’s body was found dead on June 17, shot with a gun execution style.
Hernandez is being held without bail. “The involvement of an NFL player in a case of this nature is deeply troubling. The Patriots have released Aaron Hernandez, who will have his day in court. At the same time, we should not forget the young man who was the victim in this case and take this opportunity to extend our deepest sympathy to Odin Lloyd’s family and friends,” the NFL says in a statement.
