Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT
“How to Get Away with Murder” is the latest Shonda Rhimes show to hit ABC’s Thursdays (“What else could I do? I gave her the whole night,” ABC president Paul Lee remarked at the upfronts). Presented by Rhimes and star Viola Davis, this is a suspense-filled legal drama about a law professor who teaches her students about the dirty truth underlying litigation. The results feature sex and possibly an “I Know What You Did Last Summer”-style storyline.
Tuesdays at 10 p.m.
Despite being introduced with a Welsh joke (because of star Ioan Gruffudd), ABC is giving “Forever” a top spot in the fall. The show focuses on Dr. Henry Morgan (Gruffudd), a medical examiner in New York who has been coming back from the dead (naked and in the water) for the past 200 years. He investigates criminal cases as well as his own immortality. Alana De La Garza and Judd Hirsch co-star.
The other dramas picked up at ABC are scheduled for midseason:
Sundays at 9 p.m. starting in the winter/spring
From Oscar-winner John Ridley, this is perhaps ABC’s favorite of the bunch.
The story focuses on a young couple attacked in their California home. With the wife clinging to life, racial tensions rise when four suspects are arrested. Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, W. Earl Brown, Richard Cabral, Caitlin Gerard, Benito Martinez, Penelope Ann Miller, Elvis Nolasco and Johnny Ortiz star
‘Marvel’s Agent Carter’
Hayley Atwell reprises her “Captain America” role as Peggy Carter, an agent of the Strategic Scientific Reserve. After the end of World War II and the disappearance of Steve Rogers, Agent Carter must manage chauvinism, a desk job at the SSR and secret missions for Howard Stark.
ABC is describing the story as the origins of SHIELD and therefore the beginnings of all of Marvel’s current franchise.
‘Secrets and Lies’
After a jogger named Ben Garner (Ryan Phillipe) finds a neighbor child’s body in the woods, he quickly becomes a suspect. Seen from Ben’s eyes and with the audience not knowing the man’s guilt or innocence until the end of the 10-episode run, “Secrets and Lies” is a murder mystery in the style of “True Detective.” If the show returns, for example, a new case and a new cast will be in the story. Along with Phillipe, “Secrets and Lies” stars KaDee Strickland, Juliette Lewis, Natalie Martinez, Clifton Collins Jr., Indiana Evans and Belle Shouse.
Aliens are invading Earth by convincing children to do all sorts of awful things. The end result of this “game” is world domination and possibly the end of humanity. It’s not exactly a feel-good story. Lily Rabe, Barry Sloane, Milo Ventimiglia, Derek Webster, Brianna Brown, Catalina Denis, Kylie Rogers and Kyle Harrison Breitkopf star.
