“We wanted to bring in a rough-and-tumble former cohort of Agent Coulson [Clark Gregg] with a little bit of attitude and cigar-smoking swagger,” co-showrunner Jed Whedon tells TV Guide, adding that Garrett will work with Ward and May.
Fellow showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen adds, “[Garrett] comes into the fold in a very surprising way. He is the type who wants to stay out in the field no matter how high-level he gets.”
Paxton’s arc will begin in late February or early March and is expected to run for at least four episodes. While in the comics Agent Garrett is turned into a cyborg to save his life after being injured working for SHIELD, it’s unclear if that will be the same in the TV show. Could that story end up being a parallel to Coulson’s story? Maybe, but Whedon isn’t telling.
“When Garrett got his promotion to Level 7, he refused to sit behind a desk and doesn’t like the formalities of S.H.I.E.L.D. He’s going to help Coulson solve some mysteries and is not afraid to rig an explosive or two,” Whedon teases.
“Agents of SHIELD” airs Tuesdays on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
