Al Jazeera America and Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney will chronicle the struggles of teenagers on the verge of adulthood in the fall.
The news channel’s series “Edge of Eighteen,” executive produced by Gibney (“Taxi to the Dark Side,” “The Armstrong Lie”) will premiere Sept. 7, Al Jazeera America announced Tuesday (July 8) at the TCA summer press tour.
The six-part series follows 15 high-school seniors from around the country as they navigate their final year of high school, college applications, teenage pregnancy, gun violence and more issues. The students filmed their own experiences after receiving a “crash course” in filmmaking from Gibney.
“Edge of Eighteen” is part of the channel’s “Al Jazeera America Presents” documentary banner. Other future projects include “The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne,” about the legendary jewel thief, airing in November; and “Freeway: Crack in the System,” about the life of notorious drug dealer “Freeway” Rick Ross.
