“50 Shades of Grey” is a lot of things — including the best-selling book of all time — but it’s not exactly high art. That’s why we were surprised to learn that Gus Van Sant, director of acclaimed films like “Milk” and “Good Will Hunting,” is determined to direct the film adaptation of the steamy erotic novel.
Van Sant is so serious about taking on the project, in fact, that he’s already shot a scene from the movie. He plans to use the scene — which depicts the eager ingenue Anastasia Steele losing her virginity to the dominant, deductive Christian Grey — to convince producers that he’s the guy for the job.
According to TheWrap, Van Sant cast “Magic Mike” star Alex Pettyfer in the Christian Grey role. Pettyfer shot the scene this weekend with an unknown actress playing Steele. While this doesn’t mean that Pettyfer’s necessarily landed the role of Christian Grey, it does suggest that he’s a good candidate if Van Sant is offered the project.
Do you see Pettyfer as a good match for the role? Ian Somerhalder and Stephen Amell have also reportedly had conversations about doing the movie.
