Alicia Keys debuted her new song “Girl on Fire” during the 2012 MTV VMAs. Featuring a guest rap from Nicki Minaj, the lyrics “this girl is on fire” seemed like they were tailor-made for Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games.” But when Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas appeared onstage and began to show off some of her gold medal-winning skills, it became clear who the song was really about.
Minaj’s guest verse clued us in. “And I got ’em aggy because I win the gold like Gabby,” Minaj rapped as Douglas cartwheeled and twirled across the stage. It’s been a few weeks since the Fierce Five won the women’s gymnastics gold, but seeing Douglas’ beaming smile reminded us that a girl power anthem never goes out of style.
Keys’ new album (also called “Girl on Fire”) hits stores on November 25. Check out the performance below:
What do you think of the song and the performance? Anyone else still bummed about the missed “Hunger Games” tie-in opportunity?
