Monday’s premiere of Lifetime’s “Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy” didn’t come without controversy. The real Amanda Knox is currently in an Italian prison serving a 26-year-sentence for murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher – a crime many believe she was convicted for without sufficient evidence.
Hayden Panettiere, who plays Knox in the movie, was asked by Lifetime publicists to refrain from saying whether she believes Knox is innocent or guilty, but she did tell the LA Times, “We’re both young girls. And I care about her. To a certain degree,
guilty or innocent, I want to see her get out and be able to live the
rest of her life. She’s someone that I root for.”
The Knox family and friends protested the Lifetime movie, for which no producers, or actors met with Knox, her family, or the family of the murder victim. Knox is appealing her case and is set to return to Italian court on March 12, where she is hoping that new analysis of DNA traces found on a knife and on the clasp of Kercher’s bra will help exonerate her.
The family is concerned that the movie is biased, and will sway the Italian courts against Knox. After some protests, Lifetime chose to cut the actual murder scene from the aired version of the film. What do you think, Zap2it readers? After seeing the TV movie and watching Panettiere’s performance, do you believe Knox was guilty or innocent? Weigh in below in our poll.
