As always, the team behind “American Horror Story: Freak Show” is keeping details about the upcoming edition, “Freak Show,” close to the vest. But the cast and producer Tim Minear revealed a few details during the “American Horror Story: Coven” panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2014.
“I can tell you this, which is not much: It’s the best season so far. I actually mean that,” Minear says. “It’s not like the first three seasons.”
Minear has seen footage from the set — “Freak Show” has only been filming for a week — and says the tone of the show “can only compare to a scene from ‘Zodiac’ that was done in sherbet. Draw your own conclusion.”
Yep, that cryptic tease is all you’re going to get as far as plot details go — and that it takes place in the 1950s in Jupiter, Florida — but the actors were able to reveal information about their characters — specifically their names and relationships to each other.
Emma Roberts is playing Maggie, who she hints will not be a villain like her “Coven” character Madison. As previously announced, Sarah Paulson is playing conjoined twins Bette and Dot Tatler. Kathy Bates is Apple Darling, ex-wife of new “AHS” team member Michael Chiklis’ Wendell Del Toledo. They’re parents to Evan Peters’ Jimmy Darling, and Chiklis’ new wife is Angela Bassett’s Desiree Dupre.
But they won’t be the only main characters in the cast. Hints Minear, “You’re going to see new people and familiar faces.”
Paulson wouldn’t reveal anything about the movie magic being used to create her character’s two heads, but she does have a favorite already. “It’s only been a week but I do have a favorite: Bette is my favorite right now but it’s a week in and … for some reason she feels very organic to me somehow,” she says. “I love her.”
She continues, “There are about 22 people at a time working on every single shot that I do. It’s a very complicated, expensive situation. How it will all come together I do not know but it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.”
The rest of the panel featured the actors reminiscing about their favorite lines — they loved “Balenciaga” and “knotty pine” as much as you do — and their favorite costars — all of them share an affinity for “Franny” Conroy. It was Kathy Bates’ first Comic-Con experience, and she and the rest of the panelists were quite giggly talking about their time together.
