Angelina Jolie took the world by surprise when she penned an editorial for the New York Times, revealing she had undergone a double mastectomy. Jolie made the decision after learning she carries a gene that gives her a predisposition to both breast and ovarian cancer.
Angelina underwent the double mastectomy in February, followed by reconstructive surgery in April. According to People, that’s not the last operation she has planned, though. As Jolie still has a 50% risk of developing ovarian cancer, she is also reportedly planning to have her ovaries removed. Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, died from ovarian cancer in 2007.
After Angelina announced she had successfully completed the surgery, her partner Brad Pitt released a statement, calling her decision “absolutely heroic.” Coming forward about her procedure also led to an outpouring of support Jolie from other celebrities, many of whom reached out to her via Twitter.
