Whether you like it or not, it sounds like the mobile game “Angry Birds” is getting turned into an animated film. The game’s developer, Rovio, announced in a statement that Sony Pictures Entertainment had purchased the distribution rights for a movie that’s set to release July 1, 2016.
Rovio Entertainment will develop, produce and finance the film, according to GameSpot, then hand it over to Sony to handle the release. “Every studio in town would love to add ‘Angry Birds’ to their slate,” Sony CEO Michael Lynton and co-chairman Amy Pascal say in a statement, “There are few titles out there that bring this kind of excitement, brand awareness and built-in audience to the table.”
As for what kind of excitement can be put into a movie about a mobile game that is simply hurling birds at walls, there’s no word. David Maisel, who executive produced Marvel’s films from “Iron Man” through “Captain America: The First Avenger,” will take on a similar role with “Angry Birds.” “Despicable Me” producer John Cohen has also joined the project.
So, is this an insane cash grab or could an “Angry Birds” feature film actually be good? Whatever the outcome,it was only a matter of time before the public was inundated with movies based on mobile games. Stay tuned for the upcoming announcement of “Farmville: The Movie.”
