ann curry getty Ann Curry forgets to fact check her graduation addressWe’re pretty sure that the “Today” show fact-checks its news stories. The NBC morning show’s news anchor, Ann Curry, could’ve used a little help in that department over the weekend.

Curry delivered a commencement address at Wheaton College in Massachussetts over the weekend, and she listed some of the school’s famous alumni: Billy Graham, “60 Minutes” correspondent Lesley Stahl, film director Wes Craven and Todd Beamer, one of the heroes of United Flight 93 on 9/11. Standard graduation stuff, right?

Yeah, there was just one problem: Except for Stahl, all those people graduated from a different Wheaton College. In Illinois.

To her credit, Curry quickly apologized to the Massachussetts Wheaton in a letter.

]]>Boston Globe. She also cites some well-known Wheaton (Mass.) alums that she should have mentioned, including actress Catherine Keener and former New Jersey governor and EPA head Christie Whitman. The school doesn’t seem too upset about it either. “She gave a great speech,” Wheaton spokesman Michael Graca tells the Globe. “She went out of her way to meet with students before her speech and to get information about the college.” Wheaton edited out the references to the Illinois Wheaton alumni from the transcript and video of Curry’s address; Graca says that was done so as not to “broadcast misinformation.” Whatever the reason, we imagine Curry’s grateful for the edit.
