FXX, the comedy channel splitting off from FX later this year, has picked up its first original series — an animated comedy called “Chozen.”
The show, which has been in development at FX for more than a year, follows a “gay white rapper fresh out of prison with a new message and new skills, which he will use in his quest for redemption and domination.” The producers of “Archer” and “Eastbound & Down” are behind the show.
Grant Dekernion, a writer’s assistant on “Eastbound,” wrote the script and will be an executive producer along with “Archer’s” Adam Reed and Matt Thompson and “Eastbound’s” Danny McBride, Jody Hill and David Gordon Green.
“It’s great to be in business with Grant, Danny, Jody, David and [production company] Rough House, and this is the perfect first series order for FXX,” says Nick Grad, who along with Eric Schrier is now president of original programming for FX Networks. “‘Chozen’ is an outrageous and ballsy comedy, but it’s also a very smart examination of the rap culture.”
McBride and Dekernion are also part of the voice cast, along with Bobby Moynihan (“Saturday Night Live”), Hannibal Buress, Nick Swardson, Kathryn Hahn (“Parks and Recreation”) and Method Man.
FXX is scheduled to launch on Sept. 2. “Chozen” is likely to premiere early next year.
