Armie Hammer could soon be the answer to the question, “Who was that masked man?”
Hammer (“The Social Network”) is in talks to play the title role in Disney’s reworking of the “Lone Ranger,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. He and director Gore Verbinski have met to discuss the part.
“Lone Ranger” (Disney has apparently dropped the “The” from the title) will also star Johnny Depp — who’s worked with Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer on the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies — as Tonto.
The movie will be the first big-screen rendition of the Lone Ranger tale since the poorly received “Legend of the Lone Ranger” in 1981. Chad Michael Murray played the character in a TV movie/back-door pilot on The WB in 2003, but it didn’t go anywhere after that.
Hammer also has roles in a couple other upcoming movies, Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar” and “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White” (that’s the one with Julia Roberts as the evil queen).
