Welcome to Zap2it‘s “Arrested Development” Rewatch. Leading up to the release of Season 4, we’ll be taking a look back at the 53 episodes that made “AD” one of our most beloved TV comedies. Watch the first three seasons of “Arrested Development” on Netflix. Today we’re covering the second episode of Season 1, “Top Banana,” which premiered Nov. 9, 2003.
Plot: Michael tries to find his father’s missing flight records, while George Michael tries to distance himself from his cousin Maeby. Both attempts fail, with the storage unit the records were in being burned to the ground and Michael giving Maeby a job in the Bluth frozen banana stand. That ends up going up in flames as well, and unfortunately for Michael and George Michael, there really was always money in the banana stand. Meanwhile, both Tobias and Lindsay audition for a fire sale commercial, though neither ends up answering when they get their call backs.
Bluth Company status: Michael is on the hunt for missing flight records while George Sr. remains in jail. G.O.B. can’t even mail a stupid letter.
Milestones: First time George Michael fails to understand the term “Mr. Manager.” First and only appearance of Lucille’s maid Luz before she is replaced by her sister Lupe. First introduction of Tobias as a never nude, though the term is not stated until later. First instance of G.O.B.’s one-sided sibling rivalry with Michael.
Recurring joke worth remembering: “No touching!”
Joke that still makes us laugh hysterically: “There’s always money in the banana stand.”
Most sexual tension: Maeby is forced to sit on George Michael’s lap during a car ride, and he is stuck working with her in the tiny banana stand. As Michael tells his son, “You stay on top of her, buddy. Do not be afraid to ride her. Hard.”
Best narrator commentary: “And so Lindsay and Maeby separately went to the same restaurant to celebrate the jobs they hadn’t actually performed with money they hadn’t actually earned.”
Next on “Arrested Development”: G.O.B. “protests the pet’s store exchange policy” by throwing his dead dove (and rabbit) out into the ocean, while Michael and George Michael rebuild the banana stand because it’s “the only profitable part of the Bluth empire.”
