Welcome to “Arrested Development” Rewatch. Leading up to the release of Season 4, Zap2it will be taking a look back at the 53 episodes that made “AD” one of our most beloved TV comedies. Watch the first three seasons of “Arrested Development” on Netflix. Today we’re covering the eleventh episode of Season 2, “Out on a Limb,” which premiered March 6, 2005.
Everything changes for Buster Bluth in “Out on a Limb,” and surprisingly that change takes place in the episode’s short Next on “Arrested Development” segment. The youngest Bluth child gets his hand bitten off by a seal that his older brother GOB set free into the ocean, leading into one of the funniest recurring jokes on the rest of “Arrested Development’s” run. Here’s to hoping that Buster’s hook hand returns in the upcoming Season 4 as well.
Michael Bluth continues to date Sally Sitwell, but that ends when he learns that Maggie Lizer is eight and a half months pregnant — the same length of time since they last had sex. Though she denies that the child is his, Michael feels responsible and Sally breaks up with him over it. He enlists Lindsay and Tobias to discover if Maggie is lying again or not by stealing a urine sample, and it turns out that his lawyer ex actually is expecting. Meanwhile Maeby tries to break up George Michael and Ann by introducing Ann to Lucille, but Ann ends up turning Lucille to God. Lucille is in denial over Buster being sent to war in Iraq, but only comes to terms with his impending departure after George Sr. comes to say goodbye to his son but accidentally reveals that Buster’s father is really Oscar.
Bluth Company status: Not mentioned this episode due to Michael’s focus on his relationship drama.
Notable guest stars: Christine Taylor as Sally Sitwell, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Maggie Lizer, Mae Whitman as Ann Veal and Henry Winkler as Barry Zuckerkorn.
Memorable line: “You are a worse psychiatrist than you are a son-in-law, and you will never get work as an actor because you have no talent.” — Lucille Bluth to Tobias
Milestones: Buster gets his hand bitten off by a seal.
Recurring jokes worth remembering: Maggie Lizer’s bad habit of lying, Oscar being Buster’s real father, the fact Michael can’t remember Ann’s name and George Sr.’s love of the Living Classics pageant.
Most sexual tension: Michael sees a very pregnant Maggie Lizer almost nine months after their last tryst and finds himself very attracted to her larger breasts, while Lindsay manages to pleasure herself very effectively.
Best narrator commentary: “George Sr. had always worn the God costume at the annual Living Classics pageant where he and Buster recreated Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam.”
Next on “Arrested Development”: Maggie Lizer’s fat suit turns out to actually be for her client, Lucille prays for Buster to not go to war and Buster finally goes swimming in the ocean, only to get his hand bitten off by a loose seal.
