“Awkward’s” Season 4 midseason finale, “Snow Job,” aired on Tuesday (June 17), but the hour-long episode looked absolutely nothing like the MTV dramedy viewers have come to know and love for the past three seasons.
And no, we’re not just talking about the unseasonably snowy setting, as the Palos Hills High seniors went on their end-of-year ski trip.
The entire episode focused on finally getting to the bottom of psycho liar Eva’s real story, and the real story ended up being … that she’s a psycho liar. Apparently, Eva’s real name is Amber, she’s been home-schooled since she was kicked out of school when she was nine for stabbing another kid with a pencil, and her room (in a home that’s not even in the right district for Palos Hills High) is decorated with creepy, stalker bulletin boards of all of Jenna and Matty’s friends. Did we change channels or something?
“Awkward” has always been about the hilarious — yet believable — shenanigans Jenna and her high school friends get into. It’s all usually relationship dramas, school issues, complicated family dynamics and silly fights between friends. But now we’re veering into soap opera territory. As much as we loved all the “One Tree Hill’s” and “The O.C.’s” that came before, they always had some wacky storyline that regular teens just couldn’t relate to. That’s where “Awkward” always excelled: Being refreshingly real and down-to-earth.
