It’s back to the future. Really. Mattel has announced that a replica of the hoverboard that Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) famously rode in “Back to the Future, Part II” is going on sale, and you can get it just in time for Christmas.
The product was announced at the annual American Toy Fair. The hoverboard will feature the “whooshing sounds” one might expect from such a thing. The company says that the product won’t hover, but it will “glide over most surfaces.” Mattel says that it may be able to add a hover feature by 2015, although we’re curious about the science associated with that capability. And, no surprise here, it doesn’t work on water.
This isn’t the first time that products from the film have gone on sale recently. In Sept. 2011, rapper Tinie Tempah bought a pair of Nike Air Mags, the high top shoes that Marty wore, sold for $37,500.
The company is accepting pre-orders for the hoverboards through their Matty Collector website.
