Matt Watson was a 30-year-old barista at All City Coffee in the Seattle, Wa. area. That all came to a end, according to the Seattle Times, when it was revealed that Watson was the writer behind a blog titled, “The Bitter Barista.”
The blog is a collection of thoughts, labeled as satire. A few examples include:
“You can say ‘2% milk’ all d— day. You’re getting whole milk.”
“Please pour your coffee into the trash can so it can ruin my day later.”
“What a coincidence! You have a gluten allergy, and I don’t care that you have a gluten allergy!”
The blog was anonymous not giving a name or a location, but Watson’s identity was found by another coffee website, who outed him. The guys who run that site, Zachary Carlsen and Jordan Michelman, weren’t fans of the blog. “There’s a lot of anger in this blog, and while we love the well-worn barista clich, it should be the stuff of mild parody, not an all-out assault on whomever walks through the door of your cafe,” they wrote on their site, Sprudge.
Once the secret was out, Watson’s boss had no choice but to let him go, as some of the postings happened on company time.
It’s not all bad news for Watson, as he says he’s already received offers from other coffee shops. He’s also hoping to put together a coffee table book based on the blog. He’s in way better shape than the waitress fired after posting a picture of a receipt with a rude note left by a customer.
