The BBC Two Twitter account announced on Sunday (April 6) that Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing the title character in Shakespeare’s “Richard III” for an upcoming program.
We’re delighted to be able to confirm that Benedict Cumberbatch will play Richard III in our second series of Shakespeare’s History plays.

There is definitely a pattern going on here. Cumberbatch is already set to play the lead in “Hamlet” in London during summer 2015. His “Sherlock” co-star, Martin Freeman, meanwhile, is also set to play Richard III — this time on the London stage — in summer 2014.
This should be an incredible chance to compare the two “Sherlock” stars in the same role. A specific premiere date for Cumberbatch’s “Richard III” has not yet been announced.
