Congratulations, film industry! A drug-dealing monkey and a band of idiots may have given you the best Memorial Day Weekend showing ever.
“The Hangover Part II” grossed an estimated $30 million on Friday – and a total of $61.1 million over its two-day release – giving it the best opening for an R-rated film ever. In fact, it’s on track to score $135 million in its first five days. “Hangover” is quickly shaping up to be the best-performing film of the year in the domestic box office.
Sequels reigned on Friday night — the animated 3-D “Kung Fu Panda 2” came in with an estimated $13.2 million on Friday, bringing its two-day cumulative numbers to $19 million. Because it’s a family film, it’s estimated to be even more successful over the course of the weekend and is expected to gross a total of $60-$70 million for its five-day debut.
Feeling new pressure from these two debuts was “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” which fell significantly this week, only grossing about $10.9 million, which brings them to an impressive cume of $124.4 mil. Rounding out the Top 5 was “Bridesmaids” ($4.6 million for a cume of $73.4 million) and “Thor” ($2.4 million for a cume of $152.7 million).
