Robert Rodriguez‘s “Machete” snuck past the Labor Day weekend competition Friday night, pulling in an $3.9 million its first day in theaters, besting it’s closest competition by an estimated $100,000.

]]>George Clooney‘s “The American,” brought its three-day total to $7 million with Friday’s 3.8 million take, easily poising it to reclaim the top spot by the end of the holiday weekend, should “Machete” falter. In their second weeks, “Takers” drops to third place ($3 million) and “The Last Exorcism” falls to fourth ($2.3). Real-life couple Drew Barrymore and Justin Long’s romantic comedy “Going the Distance” — the third of the week’s new R-rated offerings — trailed closely in fifth place with $2.3 in first day tickets.
