A surprise to no one, “Twilight: Eclipse” is continuing its steady climb at the box office despite the Fourth of July holiday generally being a slow one at the movie theater. Early estimates put the film’s three-day gross at $69 milion, with its total since its Wednesday release at $161.7 million.
What is surprising, however, is the success of “The Last Airbender.” The film’s estimates have been revised, since it’s doing much better than expected, despite dismal reviews and poor word-of-mouth from fans of the original animated series. Now, the film is expected to hit a target of $40.6 million this weekend, pushing its total to $70.5 million, a respectable No. 2 on the box office list.
Rounding out the top five are “Toy Story 3,” “Grown Ups,” and “Knight and Day.” The total for this weekend’s Top 12 is expected to reach $184.2 million, which is very strong compared to this weekend in 2009, which hit $155.4 million. 2009’s Fourth of July weekend was led by “Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen.”
