Heisenberg, meet Katzenberg.
DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg says he offered the producers of “Breaking Bad” $75 million to make three additional episodes of the series.
“I had this crazy idea,” Katzenberg said Wednesday (Oct. 9) at MIPCOM, an international TV marketplace in Cannes, France. “I was nuts for the show. I had no idea where this season was going.”
Katzenberg’s motives, however, went beyond just being a superfan. He made the offer on the condition that he be able to release the shows as a series of 6-minute webisodes that viewers would pay a small per-episode fee to watch. His goal was to create the “greatest pay-per-view television event” ever for a scripted series, according to accounts of his address.
“There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that millions of people would have downloaded those episodes,” he says.
Katzenberg made his offer six weeks ago — before he and the rest of the world saw “Breaking Bad’s” rather definitive finale, which closed the book on Bryan Cranston‘s Walter White. (Additional episodes would, however, potentially allow for Britney Spears’ preferred ending.)
