The return of “Breaking Bad” scored series-record ratings for AMC Sunday night (Aug. 11), drawing the show’s biggest audience ever — and more than doubling its previous high.
Yes, doubling. A whole lot of people must have caught up with the series since the first half of Season 5 ended, because the show has never even come close to this big an overnight rating. Sunday’s episode drew 5.9 million viewers; its previous high, for the fifth-season premiere in July 2012, was 2.9 million viewers.
“Breaking Bad” also drew 3.6 million people in the adults 18-49 demographic, making it the top show of the night in that measure, broadcast or cable.
Following “Breaking Bad,” new series “Low Winter Sun” premiered to 2.5 million people. That compares favorably to the series debuts of other AMC shows, including “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad,” but it also lost close to 60 percent of its lead-in audience. The “Breaking Bad” recap show “Talking Bad” brought in 1.2 million viewers at 11 p.m.
AMC also got some good numbers from the third-season premiere of “Hell on Wheels” in its new Saturday timeslot. It scored 2.5 million viewers, slightly up from last year’s Sunday-night debut and more than double the channel’s average for Saturday night.
