Broadway might have resumed most of its shows soon after Hurricane Sandy hit, but audiences didn’t flock to the Great White Way like the Broadway League might have hoped.
After Sandy struck on Oct. 29, the organization was forced to shut down all shows from Monday until Wednesday. Even once the shows did reopen, audiences didn’t show up to attend, either because it was nearly impossible to get around New York City or because they had other concerns on their mind.
As a result, Broadway’s revenue went from $20,083,783 the week of Oct. 22 down to $13,578,724 the week of Hurricane Sandy, and attendance dropped from 214,909 ticket holders to 149,443, according to data released by the Broadway League. But those close to the organization are optimistic about Broadway’s recovery.
“It will come back to its former life, there’s no question about it. Broadway is New York and everyone celebrates the theater in this city,” Broadway producer Barry Weissler tells the Associated Press. “It’s catch-up time.”
The shows that were hardest hit were “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” which lost $538,853 and “Wicked,” which lost $490,996.
