Broadway performer Nina Arianda isn’t exactly a household name, but she is a Tony Award-winning actress who just signed on to play Janis Joplin on film — a role that could catapult her to big screen stardom.
Arianda, currently starring in Broadway drama “Venus in Fur,” has signed on to play the title role in a Joplin project from director Sean Durkin (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”). Deadline reports that Arienda will sing using her own voice and that shooting is scheduled to begin in 2013.
Several actresses/singers — including Zooey Deschanel, Pink, Renee Zellweger and Amy Adams — have been rumored to be circling the role in a few different projects, none of which have made it to production.
Arianda had minor roles in four recent movies, including Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris.”
