Even keeping in mind that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association likes to be the first to honor new series, and even though Andy Samberg won a best actor award earlier in the night, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” win for best comedy series at the Golden Globes was arguably the biggest surprise of the night.
The first-year FOX comedy beat out last year’s winner, “Girls,” along with “The Big Bang Theory,” “Modern Family” and “Parks and Recreation” — for the honor. Accepting the award, co-creator Dan Goor looked just as surprised as anyone in the room.
Goor said he chose a career in comedy writing over going to medical school, and it felt very much like it was working out for the best on Sunday (Jan. 12). “This is way better than saving a human life,” he joked.
“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” will have a big chance to capitalize on its Golden Globe win in a couple weeks, when FOX airs an episode of the show (along with “New Girl”) after the Super Bowl.
