The mother of pop star Bruno Mars has died.
Bernadette Hernandez, 55, died unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm, the AP reports. She passed away Saturday (June 1) at Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, Mars’ hometown.
Hernandez, who immigrated to Hawaii from the Philippines, played a key role in nurturing her son’s career. Mars (whose given name is Peter Hernandez) and his siblings were part of a family band that performed in Honolulu, and he became known for his Elvis impersonations as a child.
“I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” he told Rolling Stone of his time with the family band, called The Love Notes.
Mars’ brother Eric plays drums in his current band, and their four sisters are recording their first album as the Lylas — and being recorded for a reality show on WE in the fall.
