“Captain America” has found its female lead in the form of British actress Hayley Atwell.
Atwell, who starred in AMC’s remake of “The Prisoner” last year, has joined the cast of “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Marvel Studios says. She’ll play Peggy Carter, Cap’s love interest.
Peggy is a character from the earliest incarnations of Captain America in the comics, a French Resistance fighter who falls for super soldier Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) during World War II. She’s also the aunt of Sharon Carter, who has a more prominent role in later comics as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. Marvel notes, however, that “the character will be updated for the feature adaptation.”
In addition to “The Prisoner,” Atwell has starred opposite Keira Knightley in “The Duchess” and in the 2008 version of “Brideshead Revisited.” She’ll next be seen in “The Pillars of the Earth,” a miniseries based on Ken Follett’s novel that premieres on Starz in July.
“Captain America,” which also stars Sebastian Stan (“Gossip Girl,” “Kings”) as Cap’s sidekick Bucky, is scheduled to begin filming in the summer. It’s set for release on July 22, 2011.
