HBO is premiering a new documentary Monday (Aug. 18) called “Captivated: The Trials of Pamela Smart,” which examines the media’s role in the country’s first murder trial that was televised “gavel-to-gavel.”

In 1991, Pamela Smart was accused (and subsequently convicted) of planning the 1990 murder of her husband Gregory. The resulting trial garnered massive media attention and “Captivated” looks to explores how that may have influenced the trial and sentencing.

It features interviews with Smart herself, journalists who covered the case, the prosecuting and defending attorneys, inmates who served time with Smart, her childhood friends and, in the first interview since his release, one of the boys convicted alongside her.
