“I don’t feel old enough to have kids. I know I am mature. But being responsible for another human?” says Underwood. She adds that having grown up as quite a bit younger than her two older siblings, she’s got a bit of “the only-child syndrome going on.”

“I’m a little more selfish, a little more independent, a little closed,” says Underwood.

“I do wish I were softer. I wish I was able to form relationships better. But hey, I mean … I’m not a sociopath,” she laughs.

Part of that comes across in her music, where she famously does not sing mushy love songs.

“I don’t want to listen to everybody’s problems all the time. And I doubt anybody wants to listen to mine,” she says.

Brad Paisley, Underwood’s friend and recurring co-host a the CMA Awards, adds that she’s a woman who knows what she wants and is a treasure to country music.

“She could have been a general … She’s the best female singer we’ve had
in our format maybe ever. She was a nobody in Oklahoma. On the first
tour, she told me, ‘I feel like I am a celebrity for no reason, like
people are resentful I didn’t have to play bars for 10 years to get a
record deal.’ And I told her she was one of the greatest gifts we have
been given in Nashville.”

High praise, indeed.
