No, you weren’t hearing things — Christina Aguilera did screw up the lyrics to “The Star Spangled Banner” before Sunday’s Super Bowl kickoff. She sang, “what so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last reaming” when she should have sang “o’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.”
When she flubbed the line, social media began buzzing, as it does. Zap2it readers responded in droves. Some demanded an apology and called her unpatriotic and a disgrace to the country. Others attributed the screw-up to nerves and said she deserved a little more compassion from football fans.
Aguilera, who attended the game with new boyfriend Matthew Rutler (above), issued a speedy statement in response to the controversy. “I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of it’s anthem still came through.”
The singer, who hails from Pittsburgh, got her start singing at Pittsburgh Penguins, Pirates, and yes, Steelers games as a child, beginning when she was 11 years old, so singing in a stadium was nothing new to her.
