The play is described as a romantic musical comedy and focuses on the characters of Aaron (Levi) and Casey (Krysta Rodriguez, “Smash”) after they get set up for a drink at a busy restaurant. Over the course of the story, a drink turns into a “high-stakes dinner” with various patrons and waiters portraying the couple’s neuroses and inner critics. All of these suddenly embodied issues sing and dance the new couple through the night.
This could either be hilarious or disastrous. Fortunately, the play was well-received during its opening Seattle run. The book for “First Date” was written by Austin Winsberg (“Gossip Girl”), with music and lyrics by Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner.
For those who might worry that this is a terrible next step for Levi, who played a dorky spy with a computer stuck in his brain for five seasons of “Chuck,” don’t. Zachary Levi is actually an excellent singer, as displayed in his voice work — and live Oscar-show performance — for the animated film, “Tangled.”
The play is scheduled to open on Aug. 8, 2013.
