Don’t bother asking if Chuey Martinez ever considers going vegan. The will doesn’t seem to be in him. The TV and radio personality premieres his new six-part series “All You Can Meat” with back-to-back episodes on Travel Channel Sunday, Aug. 12, and couldn’t be more effusive in recalling all of the succulent juiciness he encountered during filming.
With “All You Can Meat,” Martinez takes his ingrained passion for meat and heads out on the road in search of America. And in doing so, he finds more than he ever expected.
“When you think barbecue, what do you associate barbecue with?” he asks. “When I think barbecue, I think ribs; I think brisket; I think pulled pork, chicken. We covered all of that across the country, and I was really pleasantly surprised, and it was amazing to experience all of these different variations of so many traditions and so many recipes and so many different ways of cooking meat. I had no clue.”
Martinez admits to being completely caught off guard by the dedication of some to their smokers.
“I knew that it took time to really prepare a good brisket or a rib, but I encountered gentlemen and women that were cooking their briskets and ribs and smoking them for more than 18 hours,” he says with amazement. “I had no idea, man. … There was a man in Kansas — his wife was, like, ‘Yeah, he’s been baby-sitting this smoker the whole day.’ Wow. He’d get up at 2, 3, 4, 5 in the morning — he’d go to the backyard just to see how his briskets were doing. It was amazing. I couldn’t believe it.”
What are you currently reading?
“I love Harry Potter. I’m gonna admit it. I love the ‘Twilight’ books. Yeah, I love that stuff. That’s what I really enjoy to read, you know? Especially … I love to read the book and then watch the movie. Like ‘The Hunger Games.’ ‘Hunger Games’ were amazing books. Those were great.”
What did you have for dinner last night?
“This is funny — I love to have breakfast for dinner. … I had chorizo with eggs and potatoes. … My aunt actually sent over some homemade tortillas. I made chorizo and papa and egg burritos, and I had that for dinner. And I had a Snapple.”
What is your next project?
“There’s so much. I’m actually doing stuff for ESPN. I do a show called ‘Born & Raised’ for ESPN, and I also do radio on 102.7 KIIS-FM here in Los Angeles. It’s amazing to be a part of a radio station like that, you know? … I’m dabbling in everything.”
When was the last vacation you took — where and why?
“My last trip was actually to Santa Barbara, and we went wine tasting. We went to Los Olivos. That was my last trip. I took my mom, and my mom loves wine. She had a good time. She had a really good time.”�
