CMA Awards hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood kicked off the show Wednesday night (Nov. 9) with a little tribute to Hank Williams Jr., who hasn’t been seen much since he was let go from/quit “Monday Night Football” a couple months ago.
“Are you ready for an awards show?” Paisley — who was calling himself “Bradcephus” — hollered as he and Underwood took the stage. He and Underwood then broke into a version of Hank’s song “Family Tradition,” asking “Why do you drink … before an interview?”
It was a nice, light little bit — and then Williams himself walked onto the stage. The audience was clearly excited to see him again, but it also felt like they collectively didn’t quite know how to react.
Williams didn’t help matters much: When Paisley asked him if he had anything to say, he just answered, “Nope.” The three of them then did a few lines of “All My Rowdy Friends,” and that was that. If the show was going for a water-cooler moment, we’re not quite sure it hit the mark.
