The show’s head writer, Colin Jost, will join Cecily Strong as co-anchor when “SNL” returns after the Winter Olympics, Deadline reports. Meyers will make his last “SNL” appearance as a cast member on Feb. 1 before moving on to be the new host of NBC’s “Late Night.”
Jost has been on the “SNL” writing staff since 2005 and was promoted to head writer in 2012. He’s written several recurring “Weekend Update” characters, including Strong’s Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation with at a Party, and sketches including the “Fifty Shades of Grey” screen test and Kerry Washington’s cold open from earlier this season.
Having an “SNL” head writer go in front of the camera as “Weekend Update” anchor is becoming an “SNL” tradition. Tina Fey did it in 2000, and Meyers followed in her footsteps in 2006.
Jost, who’s dating “Parks and Recreation” star Rashida Jones, also does stand-up comedy — below is an appearance on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” from 2011.
