“Entertaining” was the word of the night on “Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars”, as the 12 remaining contestants delighted the audience and judges with their quickstep and jive routines.
The biggest surprises were Bristol Palin‘s rowdy cowgirl quickstep (which scored low due to a rule violation), Sabrina Bryan and Louis Van Amstel‘s technically flawless routine, and Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke phoning it in after stealing the show last week.
Here’s how the judges rated the routines:
Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani: After an injury forced the duo to be judged solely on their rehearsal for the jive in Season 9, the jilted “Bachelor” contestant redeemed herself in the show’s exuberant first dance.
Total Score: 23.5
Bristol Palin & Mark Ballas: While Bristol hammed it up as a “redneck woman” what Bruno called their “Gangnam style, Wild, Wild West” quickstep, the two were taken to task by the judges for breaking the rules (breaking hold mid-dance). Carrie Ann Inaba said, “You slammed us in the face, so we’re slamming back.” Ouch.
Total Score: 18
Helio Castroneves & Chelsie Hightower: With this week’s jive, Carrie Ann told the race-car champ, “Your body caught up to your charm,” and Len also praised him for offering “style with a smile.” Oh yeah, and his face was covered in lipstick kisses from his enthusiastic dance partner.
Total Score: 23
Apolo Anton Ohno & Karina Smirnoff: Len gave the winning Olympic speed skater another “gold medal” for combining speed with control in his quickstep, and Bruno also praised his “incredible” footwork. Carrie Ann said it best: “Someone put his competition pants on tonight!”
Total Score: 24.5
Kirstie Alley & Maksim Chmerkovskiy: Outfitted as a flapper and flirting outrageously with the judges (who managed to escape without a smooch from Tom Bergeron’s kissing bandit), the judges called her “neat, precise” jive a “great improvement on last week.” Although the actress worries that she’s as old as “three lifetimes of Shawn,” Bruno reminded her that “experience counts” and she “played it beautifully.”
Total Score: 21
Emmitt Smith & Cheryl Burke: Although the judges like the football star’s “cool cat attitude” and “red-hot chemistry” with his partner, they found his performance tonight lacking. As Carrie Ann warned, “You might want to watch out for the speed skater and race-car driver, because everyone [else] upped their game tonight!”
Total Score: 22.5
Drew Lachey & Anna Trebunskaya: The boy bander was devastated about ending up in jeopardy last Tuesday, but the judges guaranteed that we won’t see “bottom two Drew” this week. And while Bruno raved about his “muscularity, energy and attack,” he warned was too flatfooted in the jive.
Total Score: 22.5
Joey Fatone & Kym Johnson: The ‘N Sync star didn’t win any awards for technicality, but the judges all agreed that he nailed it as an entertainer. “If you can’t dance, come out and entertain us,” Len Goodman enthused. Thank you?
Total Score: 22.5
Shawn Johnson & Derek Hough: Carrie Ann officially dubbed the pair the “All-Star Sweethearts,” and Bruno praised their performance as “vibrant, exhilarating and eye popping.” And he vehemently disagreed with Len’s criticism that it was lacking: “Under a microscope, you couldn’t fault it!”
Total Score: 25
Sabrina Bryan & Louis Van Amstel: The fan favorite wowed the judges tonight with her “awesome” quickstep, earning particular praise for her upper body control, “treble kick” and “incredible” lines. Her “grace, drama and dynamic” earned the duo the season’s highest score.
Total Score: 26
Kelly Monaco & Valentin Chmerkovskiy: The judges thought the soap star, in a frothy pink ballgown, did a good job overall, but found some flaws with her technique. Carrie Ann pointed that that since she’s so tiny, Kelly needs to “dance bigger.”
Total Score: 22
Gilles Marini & Peta Murgatroyd: The pair closed out the show with Carrie Ann praising the French actor’s kicks, flicks, and “John Travolta thing” in his appealing jive fast. An emotional Gilles said his performance was a tribute to his father, who died 17 years ago today.
Total Score: 25.5
