Okay, maybe that’s jumping the gun a little bit. After all, Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) are mostly still avoiding each other and may not get together any time soon. On top of that, we don’t know that Russell’s return would mean anything to any prospective relationship between the roommates.
But why take chances, “New Girl”? Why?
Keep in mind, it wasn’t just Jess who was into Russell back in the day — Nick also had a serious man-crush on the guy. That makes me think that if Russell did come back, Nick would be consumed by self-doubt, thereby dooming anything good he could get going with Jess.
That’s not okay.
It doesn’t help that Mulroney’s guest-starring role comes in an episode called “First Date” (according to E!Online). Is this a first date between Jess and Nick that the evil fancyman is planning to crash? Could it be that, on the threshold of relationship and super-kissing bliss, Russell could ruin everything?
No. That can’t be where “New Girl” is going with this. After all, Dermot Mulroney seems like a nice man. The show wouldn’t want him targeted by the anger of millions of ‘shipping fans, would it?
“New Girl” returns with new episodes on Tuesday, March 12 at 9pm on FOX.
