“A Raisin in the Sun” is returning to Broadway in spring 2014, with two legendary names starring in lead roles. Diahann Carroll and Denzel Washington will portray mother and son in the new production of the play, written by Lorraine Hansberry.
The play is set in the 1950s, and follows a poverty-stricken black family in Chicago, who strive to move to a better neighborhood. “I think it’s one of our most original plays and I think that’s why it keeps coming back,” Carroll tells the Associated Press.
Broadway isn’t new ground for either Carroll or Washington. Denzel first appeared in “Checkmates” in 1988. He also starred on revivals of “Julius Caesar” and “Fences.” Carroll’s first Broadway appearance began in 1954 with a production of “House of Flowers.” Her last Broadway credit was in 1982 for the play “Agnes of God.”
The revival of “A Raisin in the Sun” will begin previews March 8, 2014, before opening April 3 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
