Ilya Zhitomirskiy, who is one of four friends from New York University that started social networking service Diaspora in 2010, has died at the age of 22 in San Francisco, reports the AP.
Officer Albie Esparza of the SFPD tells ABC News the death is “a possible suicide.” She also says officers were first called Saturday night (Nov. 12), but the case has been referred to the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s office to determine cause of death.
Diaspora describes its social networking site as “an open-source and distributed community of social networks
run by users that enables you to own your own personal data, control
with whom you share, and discover cool stuff throughout the Web.”
Based on the above screenshot, it seems to resemble a stripped-down Facebook profile page. People are currently leaving messages on Ilya’s wall like, “Rest in peace Ilya, you’ll be dearly missed. Extremely saddening news.”
