Yes, it’s true. Annie Lennox performed her hit “Sweet Dreams” in drag at the Grammy Awards in 1984, and her dark-haired male alter-ego vaguely resembled Lady Gaga‘s Jo Calderone (who vaguely resembled a lot of people).
Kelly Osbourne commented on the similarities via Twitter, linking to a YouTube clip of Lennox’s performance and posting, “I love lady gaga but I wish she would start giving credit where credit is due!”
While we do think Gaga is guilty of borrowing ideas — “Born This Way” sounds a lot like old-school Madonna and it’s hard to deny that Bette Midler did the mermaid-in-a-wheelchair bit better — this one may be a bit of a stretch.
Women have been dressing in drag for centuries. Ms. Lennox wasn’t asked to give credit to the millions who went before her, so should Gaga?
